Answer:
The rice under biasi or bushening system is being cultivated in Chhattisgarh, Orissa, Bihar,
West Bengal and Uttar Pradesh. More than 1.5 milllion ha area of rice in the country is under biasi
system of cultivation. In general, the productivity of the rice in these states is lower and one of the
reasons may be the adoption of biasi system which causes poor plant population and finally low yield.
However, by following the improved practices rice yield can be increased by 40-100%.
Biasi or bushenening is basically a method of broadcasting seeds in dry or wet soils after
normal field preparation. The rice plants as well as weeds grow simultaneously up to 30-40 days and
thereafter ploughing (Single or cross) is done in standing rice crop in presence of 5-10 cm of water.
This operation called biasi. It is done by desi plough. After ploughing, the rice plants are put erect and
gap flling is done by local transplanting system within 3-4 days of biasi operation. It is done manually
by labourers. Simultaneously majority of weeds are buried in the soil during this process. The process
of standing rice plant and removing weeds in the soil is known as chalai operation.
