Actually, graphite is not all that great a conductor. It has a relatively high resistivity. Graphite is used to make resistors. Graphite forms in flat plates of hexagonally arranged carbon atoms, much like the arrangement in a benzene molecule except all the hexagons are interlinked. Like benzene, there are pi bonds and since all the hexagons are interlined the electrons are delocalized throughout the entire plate allowing for some conductivity.
