Answer:
Gratitude is Great
Gratitude is the expression of thankfulness and appreciation. Gratitude means you are extremely pleased and touched by what someone did for you. Eileen Cadd said, “Gratitude helps you to grow and expand; gratitude brings joy and laughter into your life and into the lives of all those around you.”
Some encouraging or comforting words said or some kind and compassionate deeds done in the right season, to someone at the right hour of his or her need cannot be repaid financially or in kind. Those words and actions are priceless. Neither can we weight them nor measure them in any manner. When we are overwhelmed by the feeling of gratitude in such situation, the only thing we can do is to express it in gratitude.
When I think my infancy and my academic journey, my parents immediately come to my mind. The role they have played is all about selfless sacrifice for me on a daily basis.
Parents loved, supported and cared for us when we were helpless infants. Their love and care continue even when we are able to stand on our own feet. But sadly there are many cases where people forget to express their gratitude to their parents. When their parents get old and frail, they ignore them. We should stand by them in their hour of need just as they did when we were unable to take care of ourselves. Parents make sacrifices but expect nothing in return. They are happy as long as you are doing well. There is nothing in the world by which we can repay them. The least we can do for is to express our love and gratitude to them in any way possible. I am forever indebted to my parents. I was not a perfect son to my parents. At times I feel guilty, yet it doesn't matter to them. They are happy that I am able to make it this far. I am indeed truly grateful to them. Love and gratitude is all I have for them.
A beautiful quote by Melody Beattie, “Gratitude makes sense of our past, brings peace for today, and creates a vision for tomorrow.” Acts of gratitude keep the world from getting gloomy. We cannot lost hope in humanity as long as gratitude is alive. Gratitude brightens the day of the one who give it and the one who received it. Being thankful for even the little things that others do for us should be the way of life. Gratitude goes a long way, beyond what we can perceive. It has so many beneficial things. It reduces materialism and coveting. Materialism is destroying the moral fabrics of the world. People covet, the more they have the more they want. This is poisoning our society by reducing the feeling of relatedness and gratitude. They have lost the ability to appreciate and enjoy the little precious things of life. Materialism generates negative emotions, and makes people more self-centered. Gratitude takes the back seat when people are self-centered.
There is more to expression of gratitude than we may have presumed. There is scientific evidence that expressing genuine gratitude can improve physical health as well by improving quality of sleep, cardiovascular health and immune function. Gratitude promotes optimism and helps us to develop a more positive outlook towards life. It reduces the risk of depression, an increasing mental health problem.
Lionel Hampton quoted, “Gratitude is when memory is stored in the heart and not in the mind.” Gratitude is great. And great is the one who understands its value and practice it. Gratitude does not make you lesser, it makes you greater. It increases your value as a human being. "Gratitude is the sign of noble souls" -- Aesop. Gratitude is an outward expression that shows your inward self because it comes from your heart of hearts.
