In the poem, 'The Legend of Northland', the woman deserved the punishment that was given to her by the Saint.
He was starving in that cold winter and despite having plenty of cakes in the store, the little woman denied him the food.
She was selfish and that's why she tried to give him a smaller cake which only got larger each time she baked it.
