It is true that greed leads to loss, as demonstrated by the story "The Ashes that Made the Trees Bloom". There are three examples of greed in the story. Each time the wicked old couple got greedy, they were disappointed.

The first time when they dug up the spot where the dog scratched, all they found was a dead kitten. The stench (bad smell) was so strong that they had to run from there. The second time when they added the rice and beans to the mill, they got worms. This too was disgusting, and not profitable at all. In both the cases, there was a loss of time and energy. The third time however, their loss was the greatest.

When the old couple got greedy and tried to sprinkle the ashes of the mill on the cherry tree, they were not able to make the daimio happy. Instead they irritated him and his wife, who got the ashes in their eyes and nose and began coughing. Aa a result, the offenders (the old couple)

were beaten up and thrown into a ditch, where they eventually died.

The wicked couple has seen the kind old couple getting riches twice, because of the dog and even presents from the daimio. This made the wicked couple greedy, which finally made them lose their lives. So, greed undoubtedly leads to loss.
