Hello,
Group 17 belongs to group of Halogens ,
There is uninegative ions ( gain of single electron) .
EXAMPLE :- Chlorine,
Atomic Number :- 17
Electronic Configuration :- 2,8,7
Valency :- 8-7 = 1 ,
Na , Atomic Number = 11,
Electronic Configuration :- 2,8,1 ,
Sodium valency of 1 to loose electron ,
Na and Cl form compound of Na+Cl-
So, Cl needs one electron to complete its valency ,it takes from Na which have to loose its one electron.
Therefore Uninegative charge is formed on Cl and unipositive charge on Na .

HOPE IT HELPS.
THANKS.
