The growth of plants occurs only in certain specific regions. In the above picture, the roots of onion bulb grow fast at the tip due to presence of dividing cells of meristematic tissues located only at these points.

Explanation:

When the root tips of onion bulb are cut, the cells in the root tip die and hence, growth stops because the tip of the roots contains the meristematic tissue which is responsible for growth. Meristematic tissues are at a constant state of division.
