Sine (abbreviated as sin) and cosine(abbreviated as cos) are trigonometric functions. They can be used in real life for finding things like heights of buildings, depth of oceans, the angles at which light will reflect and refract, distance between objects, areas of triangles, areas of polygons etc.
Right triangle definition,
 \sin( \alpha ) = opposite \: side \: \div hyptenuse
 \cos( \alpha ) = adjacent \: side \div hypotenuse
Unit circle definition
 \sin( \alpha ) = the \: y \: corordinate \: where \: the \: temiate \: ray \: touches \: the \: unit \: circle
 \cos( \alpha ) = the \: x \: coordinate \: where \: the \: teminate \: ray \: touches \: the \: unit \: circle

Wimpybrain: O can talk about this for hours and hours. So, if you want to know more about this, post another question and I will be ready to answer.
