The meaning can be both literal or figurative. Corporal Turnbull was a man who always had his equipment ready and accounted for. Probably Corporal Turnbull had a kitten that he always carried with him. Kittens are small in size. Possibly Turnbull carried his kitten where ever he went in his pocket.

There was a person called as Private Quelch in the military. After 5 minutes of conversation with private Quelch everyone would lise ehatever doubts they had in the subject. The narrator talks of the behaviour of Private Quelch. Private Quelch had a nickname which was "Professor". He was a know it all. He angered Corporal Turnbull by interrupting his lecture on grenades with extra information. Out of anger the corporal tossed the grenade to the professor and asked him to give the lecture instead. The prof. angered the squad on many occasions as well like suggesting to sing a song after running a 30 mile walk, humbling the narrator on recognising the aeroplane etc. The corporal was one not to be trifled with and someone very strong and practical. In the end, the corporal sends the professor for permanent cook duties. The narrator observed one day that the cooks were standing near a wall listening to something . They were listening to the professor talk of how removing the doing of potatoes gets rid of its nutrient value. On hearing this, the narrator became angry and fled.
