Dear Diary,
I kept my fingers crossed as I was horrified to hear from the doctor that my finger had to be operated on. I have a great fear of injections and they will cut my finger with scissors and knives. Oh no! I could not let them do so. So I myself asked the doctors if there was any other option. But there was none. My mother tried to reason with me, saying a simple operation would heal my finger totally.

From my childhood, the right side of the middle part of my left index finger had been a bit swollen. But whatever it was, I loved (and still love)it. I felt it made me different from the rest of the world. And I named it the 'potato' of my finger although the doctors called Haemangioma. We had consulted many doctors about what to do with it. And, at last, we had to go to the Plastic Surgery Department of the Calcutta Medical College and Hospital for further treatment. In there we showed the potato to doctor Prabir Kumar Jash and his team. tand at last they decided to perform a surgery.

On 28 May I was admitted to the hospital in bed number 446 in the Green Building (I still cannot understand why they call a blue and white building a green building)! My mother was allowed to stay with me as I was afraid to stay alone (I would request my dear friends not to tease me about this).
There were 28 beds in total in my ward and all the beds occupied with patients. There were a few friendly nurses and attendants. The doctors were quite friendly too. Whenever I had any problem, they help me out. After 5 days I was told that the next day on 25th I would have the operation. I was feeling very restless lying there and lazy to there was no work for me to do--no studies, nobody to talk to except my mother. Nothing to do except read a story book, eat, sleep and sit idle. There were two other kids but I did not find them good company as they were much too young to talk with.

Now let me come to the experience of the operation. I had to take dinner by 8 p.m on the day before the surgery. I could find no reason for this. It was an operation to be performed on my finger and not on my stomach. So what was the point? Why would I have to starve the whole morning? I grumbled mentally.

In the morning, I was made to wear a robe like the ones wore by desert tribals. It was loose and striped. Then I was called inside the OT. There, the doctors told me to lie down on the High operation table and the pushed many injections in my left hand and made a channel on my right hand too. Those were the most painful procedures.But the doctors helped me overcome my fear and pain. They started sending saline through the channel and oxygen through 2 pipes which were pushed into my nostrils. The doctors covered my eyes and told me to lie down quitely. I saw my finger for the last time before they covered my eyes. Then the operation started.

I could not understand what was happening but something was really happening as I could hear the chatter of scissors and knives. The doctors were very friendly and experts in their field. But I was amazed when they asked me to factorise (a + b) which could not be done-- maybe could--but it was out of my knowledge. They also asked me which school I studied in, what my favourite subject was etc. A History question was asked. They also asked if I like Biology or not. They also insisted upon my becoming a doctor in the future. So odd it was! While operating, how could cool doctors be? After more than 4 hours, it was all over. I was taken out to my work and I saw many of my relatives standing outside including the parents of my friends. At last on Friday 27th of May, I was released.

Now I am sitting in my bedroom writing about my experience to you, counting the 11 stitches on my hand waiting for normal hand and feeling a bit sad for my 'potato'. PS I am no longer afraid of injections.

So that was it for today. I will write to you tomorrow again. Till then Bye! :)

Thank You
{Hope You Understand}
