I)ANS: The difference of time is 4 minutes in 1 degree. As the the longitude of Greenwich (prime meridian) is 0 degree and and the standard meridian of India is 82° 30' E so the difference between GMT and IST is is (82° 30' × 4) minutes = 5 hours 30 minutes

ii)ANS: Longitudinal extension of India is 6807' E to 97°25' E. so middle longitude of India is about 82°30' Ewhich passes over allahabad is considered as the standard longitude of India. To maintain the same timetable all over India we follow the local time of the standard longitude of India (82°30'E) as lndian standard time which is 5 hours 30 minutes advance to GMT (0°).
