Let the 1st number be x

Given, one number is three times the other number.

So let the 2nd number be 3x

Given, their difference = 12

According to the question,

3x - x = 12

➾ 2x = 12

➾ x = \dfrac{12}{2}

➾ x = 6

1st number ➾ x

\boxed{6}

2nd number ➾ 3x

➾ 3 × 6

\boxed{18}

∴ The two numbers are 6 and 18 respectively.

If one number is X and the other is Y

Hence

3Y=X

And

X-y=12

So we can replace X by 3Y

Then

3Y-Y=12

2Y=12

Y=12/2

Y=6

And the others number is

X=3Y

Y=6

X=6*3

X=18

Let verify by doing the difference

X=18

Y=6

So,

X-Y

18-6

Equals to 12.
