Two things happened simultaneously.
In Sabarimala temple entry case women rights activists supported by Supreme Court's observation demanded right to entry in the temple citing equality equality with men.
In an another condemnable incident a daughter-in-law tortured her mother-in-law and husband, which gave ammunition to male rights activists, who are now demanding scraping of laws that are heavily inclined in favour of women interest. They too are citing equality based on gender. The women in former case say they are discriminated because of male dominating society where as men in the later case allege that they are harassed because of stringent laws, which are misused rampantly.

This article is not intended to discuss merits of the either cases rather it focuses on the subject of gender equality. Now the question is what this gender equality is? Does it mean that men and women should be considered equal in all aspects? Should both genders participate in every event without any discrimination?
The advocate of gender equality will jump immediately to answer a strong yes. But then my question is if the nature built men and women differently both physically and mentally, how can they be equal? (Nature not only made this difference in humans, it did in all living species of the planet). Those who cite article 14 that states all are equal in front of law perhaps selectively ignore other constructional provisions that clearly state that all are not necessarily equal.
I will not touch the reservation issue here. I will just cite the stringent laws on rape, domestic violence etc. Are those laws unfair? Think once more. Let me say, a woman can only be raped by a man and not vice versa, that's the way nature made it. To bring a balance the rape law needs to be highly favorable to women. Similarly physically men are stronger than women, thus domestic violence laws too heavily favours women. Now there can be some aberrations of misusing such laws. But in general these laws are just fair.
Coming back to my main point that women and men can't be equal in every aspect. Women have a special quality of giving birth, can men do that? Men can do heavy physical labour, which women can't do compared with men? Nature has made this difference, then who the human is to alter?
Let's consider other cases. In sports activities there are always men's and women's events. (Let's exclude here mixed competitions as those are irrelevant). Do we say now that such sports are unfair as it's not presenting gender equality?
Should men and women participate in same sprint events? Should women and men compete in tennis, badminton and other such sports where different events are made on gender basis? Should Serena Williams need to beat Djokovic to be a true champion?
PM Narendra Modi received flack from these gender equality advocates when he said that despite being a woman, Bangladeshi Prime Mister performed well. I asked then and also asking now is 'despite' a derogatory word to womenfolk?
Let me give an example. If there is a match between Serena Williams and Djokovic then it's obvious that Djokovic will win because of physical superiority made by nature. But if Serena defeats him then it will be said that despite being a woman Serena won against Djokovic. Here despite is used for appreciation.
Similarly in some cases where women are naturally superior like caring tender kids or something like that if a man does better surpassing his natural male capability, then also this despite word is used in appreciation.
This proves that men and women can't be equal as nature made both complimentary to each other. There might be some common ground where men and women can be treated equal like present day office work, studies etc, but still there are differences.
Now what's the real meaning of gender equality? I think gender equality can only be practiced in sharing the dignity. I mean if Serena William is women's champion and Djokovic is men's then both should be honored and paid equally. I say there is gender discrimination between Indian men's cricket team and Indian women's cricket team because both men and women team don't share the same fan following, same remuneration and same position in sporting arena.
You can find n number of cases nationally and internationally where men's champion and women's champion are treated differently. And not only in Indiabut also globally this gender equality hasn't been achieved. This requires to be achieved if we want humans to be the best species on this planet.
