Answer:
1. When you begin chewing, glands in your mouth and throat begin to secrete saliva. This process can start with the sight or smell of food. The liquid aids digestion, moistens your mouth, reduces infections in the mouth and throat, and helps protect your teeth and gums.
2. The oesophagus is only a passage way for the food and drink ingested. Digestion starts in the mouth where the teeth breaks down the food and the saliva lubricates the food so it won't obstruct the oesophagus when it goes to the stomach.
3. HCl is one of the gastric juices secreted by stomach.
HCl converts the inactive enzyme pepsinogen into its active form pepsin. Pepsin digests proteins and breaks them into amino acids.
HCl also kills harmful pathogens or particles in our food when it reaches the stomach through the gastrointestinal duct.
4. Small finger-like projections are called villi. They increase the surface area for absorption of digested food.
5. Recent medical studies have shown that eating between the hours of 12pm-11pm resulted in higher levels of blood glucose, insulin and cholesterol, than eating between the hours of 8am-7pm. So, if your goal is to reduce your body fat or your cholesterol, it may be beneficial to try curbing your late night eating habits.
