According to The Rock's autobiography “The Rock Says" It's a variation of the expression “Do you understand what I'm saying ?” or “If you know what I mean” The Rock heard it years ago when he was playing football at the University Of Miami, then three months after he joined the WWE (which was the WWF back then) while he was under the name of Rocky Maivia, he was talking to somebody backstage before a show and then he said it right out of the blue “Yeah if you smell what I'm cooking" this was two years before he became The Rock sometime in 1996
