In the alveoli, high pO2, low pCO2, lesser H+ concentration and lower temperature are favourable for the formation of oxyhemoglobin.

Oxyhemoglobin behaves as strong acid. It releases H+ which binds with HCO3-to form H2CO3 which dissociates into H2O and CO2.

Formation of oxyhemoglobin facilitates release of CO2 in alveoli. It is called Haldane effect.
