let total no. of deer in a herd be x
1/2 of x=x/2
3/4*x/2=3x/8
total deer in the herd be= x/2+3x/8+9=x
                                     =x/2+3x/8+9-x=0
                                     =4x+3x+72-8x/8=0
                                     =7x-8x/8= -72
                                     = -8x/8= -72
                                     x=72

Answer:

the number of deers in the herd are 72

Step-by-step explanation:

let the number of deers in the herd = X

no. of deers grazing in the field = X/2

no. of deers playing nearby = 3/4 of X/2

                                           = (3/4)(X/2)

                                           = 3 X / 8

no. of deers drinking water from nearby pond = 9

according to the question,

9 + X/2 + 3 X / 8 = X

9 + 4 X/8 +3 X/8 = X

9 + 7 X/8 = X

9 = X - 7 X/8

9 = 8 X/8 - 7 X/8

9 = X/8

X = 8×9

X = 72

total number of sheeps = 72
