let the number of deer in the herd=x
number of deer grazing in field =x/2
number of deer playing nearby =3/4×(x-x/2 =3x/8
number of deer drinking water =9
x/2+3x/8+9=x
8×x/2+8×3x/8+8×9=8×x
4x+ 3x+72=8x
7x -8x = -72
-x=-72
x=72

Answer:

the number of deers in the herd are 72

Step-by-step explanation:

let the number of deers in the herd = X

no. of deers grazing in the field = X/2

no. of deers playing nearby = 3/4 of X/2

                                           = (3/4)(X/2)

                                           = 3 X / 8

no. of deers drinking water from nearby pond = 9

according to the question,

9 + X/2 + 3 X / 8 = X

9 + 4 X/8 +3 X/8 = X

9 + 7 X/8 = X

9 = X - 7 X/8

9 = 8 X/8 - 7 X/8

9 = X/8

X = 8×9

X = 72

total number of sheeps = 72
