Step-by-step explanation:

let the numbers be 'a' and 'b' respectively

according to the question,

(a+b) /2 = 42

a+b = 42*2

a+b = 84      ....(i)

(a-b) /3 = 4

a-b = 4*3

a-b = 12       ....(ii)

subtract (ii)  from (i)

a+b-(a-b) = 84-12

a+b-a+b = 72

b+b = 72

2b = 72

b = 72/2

∴b = 36

now, put the value of 'b' in (i)

a+36 = 84

a = 84-36

∴a = 48

∴the two numbers are 48 and 36
