the handle of the door is provided at the free end because larger the distance from the hinge ,lesser will be the force required to open the door.

Answer: To reduce the effort to open or close the door.

Explanation:

  • We need to understand the turning effect of force which is known as moment.
  • The moment of force is the product of force applied and the perpendicular distance between the axis of rotation to the point of application of force.
  • We cannot change the axis of rotation of the force so the handle is provided away from the axis in order to increase the perpendicular distance from the axis of rotation and hence produce greater turning effect with less force.
  • Hence, the reason is explained above to reduce the effort required to open or close the door.
