Hari Singh talks about his special 'appealing smile' thrice in the
story. How would you differentiate between the first two smiles
in the beginning and the last smile towards the close of the story?

The first two smiles were insincere. They were used by Hari Singh only to gain Anil's trust. The last smile towards the end of the story was genuinely sincere as Hari Singh realised what a great person Anil was after Anil forgave him for thievery and didn't even take back his offer of teaching Hari Singh how to write complete sentences.

Answer:

At the end of the story, Hari Singh's smile was effortless as he was genuinely grateful to and appreciative of Anil's generosity. He understood that Anil had guessed how he had stolen the bundle of notes and then put them back. He would have deduced this as the notes were still wet from last night's rain! Despite this knowledge, he neither scolded Hari Singh nor handed him over to the police. He was just satisfied that Hari Singh had eventually understood his folly and returned home to put the bundle of notes back from where he had taken them. Hari Singh required no effort to put on a smile, it came automatically as his actions proved him to have turned a new leaf into being honest and trustworthy.
