Answer:
A famous quote goes, "Wine had drown more man than the sea." This line indeed says a lot about the evils that result from addiction to alcohol. Majority of alcoholics among young people starts from taking liquor for pleasure. They take a few sips thinking that it is harmless as long as they drink in moderation. But soon they become slaves to alcohol and realised that there is no easy escape from the trap.
Drinking has ruined more relationships and families than anything else. A drunkard forgets his responsibilities to provide for his family. Every day hundreds of people in India die from damaged livers and kidneys and other diseases related to alcoholism. Many alcoholics are left bankrupt from medical treatment of alcohol related diseases. They also become unemployed because they can no longer work efficiently. Another sad part of alcoholism is that it effects the poorest of the poor the most.
Aspirations and ambitions are crushed, and careers ruined by alcoholism. The youths become a liability instead of assets to the nation. Addiction to alcohol leads to completed degeneration of man, physically and spiritually. They lost the trust and the respect of their community and family members. We must not forget that alcoholism is always linked to various criminal and antisocial activities.
The government is not doing enough. It must not think that financial income from taxes on liquor is more important than the welfare of the people. Education and awareness on the evils of drinking must be taken up on a war footing. Strict policies on the production and sale of alcohol must be framed. The government, voluntary organisations and the community must unite to root out this destructive menace to the family, the community and the nation.
