leave their houses at 10 am, they arrive at the bench at the same time. They both walk at 2
km/hr uphill and 4 km/hr downhill. After talking for an hour they each return home.
How much earlier does Joe arrive home than Harry?

Given : Harry lives at the top and Joe lives at the bottom of a hill 6 km long

if they both leave their houses at 10 am, they arrive at the bench at the same time.

They both walk at 2 km/hr uphill and 4 km/hr downhill.

After talking for an hour they each return home.

To Find : How much earlier does Joe arrive home than Harry?

Solution:

Total Distance = 6 km

Time to reach bench  = T hrs

In going toward Bench

Harry goes down hill = 4 km/hr  so distance covered = 4T  km

Joe goes up hill = 2 km/hr  so distance covered = 2T  km

4T + 2T  = 6

=> T = 1   hr

Harry goes down hill = 4 km

Joe goes up hill = 2 km

Hence they meet at  11 AM

and Leave at 12 PM

While returning

Joe need to go down hill  2 km

Time Take = 2/4  = 1/2  hr

Harry need to go uphill 4 km

Time Taken = 4/2  =  2 hr

Difference in Time = 2 - 1/2  = 1 1/2 hrs

Hence Joe arrives 1 1⁄2 hours before Harry.
