Has abolition of untouchability improved the status of Dalits in the society?

Before untouchability was abolished under the Untouchability Act (1955), Dalits and untouchables were not allowed basic facilities. Dalit students could not sit in the same classroom as other students, the could not drink from the same water cup etc. Dalits were also not allowed into religious places of worship. They were denied access to ponds, wells, public places etc. Therefore banning untouchability has helped.

But even today, untouchability is still common in some places of India. Unless the law officials begin to crack down on these cases, untouchability cannot be completely abolished.
