The word 'democracy' comes from two Greek words, 'demos' which means the people and 'kratia' which mean rule or power. Briefly, we can say that democracy is the rule of the people and by the people. To keep the meaning of democracy intact the people of India have to be ethical. Ethics is some kind of standard that you make to go about in life so that you get rights to exercise without any obstacle and at the same time respect the rights of our fellow being. This is what is missing in India today. Most of us try to exercise our rights by trespassing on others rights We vote the wrong person to power. Many of the economically backward section of people in India exercise their franchise in exchange for money from politicians.
Most Indians now just take the wrong way to get their work done without a second thought. Either they bribe the person from whom they need to extract their work or take the law into their hands. This is because the legal system in India is very sluggish and inactive. The laws of our land are quite efficient but they are seldom used to protect the common Indians. It's rather exercised to protect the corrupt and the powerful.
Thus a country which has a majority of unethical people it's very easy for the disgruntled politicians and the selfish corporators to rule them; suppress the common masses rights, make democracy a rubber stamp and rule the country like dictators.
India is a democratic country no doubt but has lost its meaning.
