In chemistry, neutralization or neutralisation (see spelling differences), is a chemical reaction in which an acid and a base react quantitatively with each other. In a reaction in water,neutralization results in there being no excess of hydrogen or hydroxide ions present in solution.

Neutralization refers to reaction between an acid and a base to give salt and water.
For example,
HCl + NaOH -----> NaCl + H₂O
The above neutralization is between a strong acid and base.This gives rise to a neutral salt.
But what happens when during the reaction of weak acid and a base?
Let's see an example --
CH₃COOH + NaOH ----> CH₃COONa + H₂O
Here CH₃COOH is a weak acid and NaOH is a strong base. The salt formed is basic in nature.
The same happens between strong acid and weak base.
HCl + Ca(OH)₂ -----> CaCl₂ + H₂O
Here, HCl is strong acid while Ca(OH)₂ is weak base. The resulting salt is acidic.
For example,
HCl + NaOH -----> NaCl + H₂O
