For the first revelation, archangel Gabriel (Jibreel in Arabic) appeared to Prophet Muĥammad ŝall-Allaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam (peace and Allaah's blessing be upon him) in human form and conveyed five short verses of the word of God:
“In the name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
1 Recite to people in the name of your Lord Who created – 2 Who created every human being from a clinging clot[1]. 3 Recite – and your Lord is Most Generous, 4 Who taught by the pen, 5 taught people what they knew not.”
The Prophet was terrified with this unexpected visit. He did not know what to make of it. Over the next few days, Jibreel continued to appear visually to him whereby he would introduce himself and tell the Prophet that he has been appointed as the Messenger of Allaah. This continued until the Prophet stopped being scared of him and became comfortable with his appearance and voice. After a few days of such interaction, Jibreel appeared to him and brought the second revelation consisting of seven very short verses, which gave him the initial instructions of starting the mission of calling people to Islam:
“In the name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
1 O you wrapped up in a blanket! 2 Stand up and warn the people; 3 proclaim the Greatness of your Lord; 4 purify your garments and character; 5 keep away from uncleanness; 6 and do not discontinue your efforts when you feel that you have done enough, 7 rather, persevere for your Lord.”
Thereafter, the Prophet will hear some sort of soft bell-like sound to get the Prophet’s attention and then Jibreel will recite the words of revelation, which will be immediately etched into his memory; and the Prophet will recite back to ensure that he grasped the words exactly as recited to him. As the Prophet’s experience grew, reciting back was also not needed. Once he heard the words of revelation, they were permanently etched in his memory. However, once a year, in the month of Ramadhaan, the Prophet would recite to Jibreel, as a double check, the whole Qur-aan revealed until that time in proper order of its compilation.
In addition, revelation of the Qur-aan was immediately put in writing as soon as it was revealed. The Prophet himself did not know how to write, but he would dictate to a literate person immediately after receiving the revelation. The documentation of the revelation was arranged from the very early stage of his receiving the revelation. Thus with the arrival of final revelation, the compilation and documentation of the Qur-aan was instantly complete.
