We lived about 1.2 miles from my elementary school. Before I was ten, my Aunt Cathy would watch me at her house until my mother picked me up after work. Then, everyone decided that it would be okay for me to walk home and stay alone until my sister got home from her school. She was fourteen and in middle school. But the rule was very clear. Straight home. No stopping, No talking to anyone just straight home. Between my school and our house was a shopping center that had the greatest place in the world for a ten year old- a Woolworth’s. There, a dollar could buy all sorts of treasures or candy. But, there was that rule. Straight home. No stopping. I was supposed to call mother at her office when I got home. I had about twenty , maybe thirty minutes alone until my sister got home. And one day, I had money. A whole ten dollars. An absolute treasure for a ten year old in 1968. So, I gave into temptation and stopped at Woolworth’s.
