Have you ever experienced any incident of kindness ?

This incident occurred not too long ago and is now engraved in my long-term memory.



Here it begins: One fine evening, I was headed to the neighboring town of Udupi on my two-wheeler along with my BFF to meet some friends for Chai(Tea time). We wanted to try out this restaurant Mitra Samaj that made the awesomest Button Idlis, Goli bajes and Dosas.

We were halfway there on full speed when all of a sudden there came a loud BANG!!   The Pro-rider that my plus one is (or so he keeps claiming :P) managed to stabilise and maneuver the wobbling vehicle to the side magnificently. We slowed down and  eventually parked by the side of the road. We checked the scooter. It had a flat and there was no spare.

How life got worse: It was past 6 pm, so heading to the main service centre was out of the question. The local garages were also closed early since the next day was a Sunday and I had no contacts of any mechanics in the area.

We were both at a loss. Should we just leave the vehicle there on the side of the road and wait till Monday?

Angel in Stranger's disguise: He went around asking the locals if there was a mechanic in the vicinity, while I remained loyally guarding the scooter. As I looked around I noticed a man on a scooter parked a few meters behind us observing our turn of events. Not creepy. Looked like a local. Out of curiosity I smiled at him. It was like a cue for him to approach. He drove up to me and said,

Stranger [pointing at the scooter]: "Madam, tyre puncture hua kya?"  [Madam, do you have a tyre punctured ?]

Me (disappointed): "Haan. Aur mechanic nahi hai. Sab kuch jaldhi band ho gaya aaj." [Yes. and No mechanics available either. Everything has shut down early today.]

By this time BFF just got back with no results.

Stranger (hesitating, in Hindi):"Ummmm ...mere paas ek number hai. Tum le lo. Usse baat karo. Bolo kya problem hai. Wo gaadi theek kar lega!"   [ummm...I have a number. Speak to that person. Tell him the problem. He will fix your vehicle!]

Both of Us: "Thank you bhaiyya!!"[Thank you brother]

BFF (in Kannada): "Aaa...Number heli. hesaru aenu? " [Yes. tell me the number. and what is his name?]

Stranger(in Kannada): "Hesaru gothilla. Bundu repair maadthaane. Neevu ondsathi call maadi." [I don't know what his name is. He will come and repair. Just call him once.]

                                                      We took the number.

                                               Then he was gone! Just like that.

Dialed the number. 10 minutes later this mechanic arrived - another nameless stranger who just came, didn't want to talk much, did his good deed for the day and left. No questions asked. He repaired the vehicle using the help of his tiny phone's torch.

My scooter was up and running in 30 minutes !!  No nonsensical formalities and without burning a hole in my pocket.

                                 All thanks to these two gracious strangers.
