A military dictatorship, also known as a military junta is a form of government different from civilian dictatorship for a number of reasons. It means a military or political group that rules a country after taking power by force.

In Africa, especially Libya, the military junta was in power from 1969 - 2011. In Burma (Myanmar), an Asian country, the military junta was in power from 1962 - 1974  and from 1988 - 2011.

East Libya was under the military junta rule which was accountable to Muammar Mohammed Abu Minyar Gaddafi, also known as Colonel Gaddafi until his death in 2011.

In Burma, in 1962 the mystical military strongman Ne Win took control, until 2011 which marked the historic electoral victory of Ang Suu Kyi.
