Historically, surnames evolved as a way to sort people into groups - by occupation, place of origin, clan affiliation, patronage, parentage, adoption, and even physical characteristics (like red hair). Many of the modern surnames in the dictionary can be traced back to Britain and Ireland.

Surnames have been used historically to categorise people into groups according to things like occupation, location of origin, clan connection, patronage, parenthood, adoption, and even physical traits (like red hair). A large number of the contemporary surnames in the dictionary have roots in Britain and Ireland.

The Hazaras are an ethnic group that makes up a significant portion of Afghanistan's population. They are native to and primarily reside in the Hazaristan (Hazarajat) region in central Afghanistan, though they are also dispersed throughout the country. Hazara is the Persian and Hazaragi translations of the word. One of the major ethnic groups in Afghanistan, they are also a sizeable minority in Iran and the bordering countries of Pakistan and Quetta. They converse in Dari, one of Afghanistan's two official languages, and the Hazaragi and Dari dialects of Persian.

One of the most persecuted ethnic groups in Afghanistan is the Hazara community, and they have been subjected to many forms of discrimination over the years.
