Given,

Mean = 8

Total observations = 5

To Find,

The new mean if one item 15 is replaced by 5 =?

Solution,

We know from the formula that mean is a sum of all observations divided by the number of observations.

Mean  = Sum of all observations / Total number of observations

8 = Sum of all observation / 5

Sum of all observations = 5*8

Sum of all observations = 40

Now, 15 is replaced by 5, Therefore,

New sum of all observations = 40 - 15 + 5

The new  sum of all observations = 30

New Mean = 30 / 5 [Total number of observation remains same]

New Mean = 6

Hence, the new arithmetic mean is 6.
