The narrator was simply astonished to see the boys work yet they spent their money so meagerly so he wanted to know what those boys did of all the money they earned. When he asked Nicola about this, he grew pale of embarrassment...............

“He coloured deeply under his sunburn, then grew pale”

Explanation:

The sentence says that the two boys works very hard and they do number of odd jobs. They also earned lots of money which is more than sufficient to them and made a good trade. But they wear poor and dirty dress.

Their appearance was like a poor people with less money. The narrator wants to know what they did that earned money. So he asked the boys about the money they earned. As narrator asked such a question, he turned pale.
