Mahatma Gandhi defined Swadeshi as "that spirit in us which restricts us to the use and service of our immediate surroundings to the exclusion of the more remote". It the movement which restricts one to serve the neighboring countries while using their products. When we abandon the use of foreign goods and services, we lead to the economic and demographic growth of the nation.

The three branches according to him were religion, education and economic life.

Religion:

Hinduism has become a conservative religion and, therefore, a mighty force because of the Swadeshi spirit underlying it. Because of the Swadeshi spirit, a Hindu refuses to change his belief, not necessarily because he considers it to be the best, but because he knows that he can complement it by introducing reforms.

Education:

The educated classes have received training through a foreign tongue. The uneducated people who cannot follow the language, therefore, cannot recognise us more than the English officials. Had we been educated through vernaculars, our elders our servants and neighbours would have partaken our knowledge.

Economic life:

According to swadeshi doctrine, we must find out neighbours who can supply our wants and if they struggle then to teach them how to proceed as they are in need of a healthy occupation. instead, we accepted imports.
