The story of "He said it was arsenic", starts off with the introduction of certain type of killers. William Jones is one such type who is a magnificent killer for he kills his victims smoothly with no violence.
He was a male nurse in the hospital of Agra who always handled terminal cases. Since terminal patients do not have much chances of recovering thus their death could never be highlighted. Jones then falls in love with Mrs. Browning, i.e. the wife of a stationmaster in Meerut.
They come to exchanging letters,an activity that becomes noted the people working in the postal department. Mrs. Browning’s husband falls sick and dies silently.
After that Mrs.Browning shifts to Agra and takes a home beside Mr. Jones. Later Jones’ wife dies too, due to ill health.
The letters sent by Jones would contain powdery substance for Mrs.Browning. She used the same powdery substance to kill her husband slowly and silently.
Later on during investigations its discovered that the letters and that powdery substance was found from under the mattress of Mrs. Browning’s bedroom. Both were arrested and next Jones was sentenced to jail for eight years.
20 years later a character Rusty receives a visitor from South Africa, his uncle Jones who is old now. Uncle Jones told him about his book that went on to become a best seller and thus he thought of visiting his nephew, the only living relative.
Rusty believed that Uncle Jones had come to him to take away his royalties for a few years by killing Rusty. Uncle Jones tries to trick Rusty by mixing in his glass of Sherry but Rusty is smart and didn’t want to take any chances, so he turned it round with his index figure and said it was a custom here to revolve the tray as it would bring good luck. Uncle Jones turned it again for more luck, and then Rusty also turned it to reverse the luck. Uncle Jones got confused and Rusty quickly drank his glass of sherry.
Later Jones was taken violently ill and was found out that there was arsenic meant for Rusty.
Rusty asks why Jones had slipped his famous powder in one of the glasses, and Jones replied that under the circumstances it seemed the only decent thing to do. And for this reason Uncle Jones was always the perfect gentleman for Rusty.

Explanation:
There are a number of instances presented in this story by Ruskin bond. However the underlying theme for all the cases is more for less same i.e. how Jones indulged himself into killing others or poisoning others.
At first, it showed how terminal patients used to be killed by him when he used to work as a male nurse in an Agra based hospital.
Later, after he fell in love with a married woman named Mrs. Browning, he used to send a bit of poison in powered form to her in letters, so that she could kill her husband by feeding it.
Again many years later, after he came out of jail after an impression meant of eight years, he wanted to poison Rusty i.e. his nephew, but was eventually caught by the latter out of his smartness.
This poisoning contained arsenic and hence the name of the story comes up. He justified himself saying that under that condition, it was the only thing he could use to poison him.
Actually, He wanted to take all the Royalty money from Rusty against his bestselling book.
So, his motif had always been to kill others.
