In indirect speech, the sentence can be written as - 'He wanted to know the time from his friend.'
There are some rules of changing a direct sentence into an indirect one.
Rule 1 - If in a direct speech there is 'will say' or 'say/says', then, in that case, we do not alter the tense that is found in the quotation marks.
Rule 2 - If in a direct speech, the words inside the quotation marks speak of universal truth, then in that case Rule 1 has to be followed.
Rule 3 - If there is a mention of 'said' in the direct speech then, in that case, the tense of the words within the quotation mark should be changed into the past tense.
