Explanation:

The following guidelines may help in transforming a sentence from Direct into Indirect Speech.

1. See a statement inside the inverted commas and decide the kind of a sentence as to Assertive, Imperative , Interrogative or Exclamatory etc

Because there are different set of rules to be applied for each category of sentence .

2. Look at the verb outside the inverted commas. This is called Reporting verb. If it is in Present or Future tense there are different rules to convert sentence into indirect form. And if it is in Past tense , the rules to be applied are different.

3. Now look at the given sentence .

He said, ‘I am not well.’

The reporting verb is in Past tense i.e ‘said’.

The reporting verb is in Past tense i.e ‘said’.

See what the rule says.

1. If the Reporting Verb is in the Past Tense, the verb in the Reported Speech must also be changed to same form of Past Tense, i.e.

Keep it in mind.

There is an assertive ( Negative ) sentence inside the inverted commas . Follow the following Guidelines

In reporting an assertive / declarative sentence, “that” is placed between the reporting verb and the reported statement.

The pronouns of the Direct Speech are changed, where necessary,

so that their relations with the reporter and his hearer, rather

than with the original speaker, are indicated.

Adverbs expressing nearness should be changed into adverbs expressing distance.

Actually no such adverbs are used in the given sentence. Hence we may leave it off.

Now try your self :

He said that he was not well.

Note : 01. Simple present tense is changed into simple past tense.

02. Pronoun ‘I’ is changed into
