A complex sentence can never have two or more independent or main clauses. There has to be one main clause on which will depend any number of subordinate clauses.

‘He was tired of walking’ is a simple sentence as it has only one clause which is a main clause. He is the subject and was tired of walking the predicate. In the complex sentence the main clause is: He was tired, where he is the subject and ‘was tired of the fact’ the predicate.  

'that he was walking' is the subordinate clause as it has no direct subject but has an embedded subject related by ‘that’.
