Height of a place X is 1600 m above sea level and that of another place Y is 900 m below sea level. What is the distance between these two places?

The height of X can be written as 1600 m and of Y is written as −900 m, because it is below sea level, which is on the opposite side of A with respect to sea level.

So, the difference the level of X and Y,
