Before Miss Sullivan began to take care of
Helen, she was quite an unruly child. She
would be up to mischief, and her parents out
of sympathy for her disabilities, did not try to
discipline her much. On one occasion Helen
locked her mother up in the pantry, while the
servants were in the other corner of the
house. Her mother was locked in for almost
three hours, and Helen took absolute delight in
her mother pounding on the door, as she could
feel the vibrations. It was after this incident
that the Kellers realised the urgent need of
educating Helen.
