Your central and peripheral nervous systems depend on certain cells that are sort of the unsung heroes of the nervous system. These cells that form myelin, protect, support, and maintain equilibrium in your nervous system are called glial cells. They are also commonly known as neuroglia and even more simply glia. In more detailed terms, neuroglia are cells in your nervous system that are not neurons. Their role is to be the support team and cheerleaders for the neurons. The neuroglia:

1.Form myelin, which wraps around axons to speed up electric impulse conduction
2.Provide nutrients to your neurons, including oxygen
3.Destroy pathogens
4.Provide a general support structure on which neurons can sit

in case of neural system all the neurones are back together by a special type of cell known as neuroglia or glial cells
#it is of three types
* Astrocyte
*oligodendrocyte
*microgliocyte
-both astrocyte and oligodendrocyte are actodermal in origin but
- microgliocyte is mesodermal in origin
- astrocyte is largest neuroglia
# on the basis of type of process it is of two types
*protoplasmic type - present in the grey matter of CNS
* fibrous type - present in white matter of CNS
-astrocyte helps in repairing of tissue and it also acts as blood brain barrier.
- oligodendrocyte is moderate in size and associated with long neurones it helps in synthesis and preservation of mylene sheath.
- microgliocyte is smallest neuroglia it is irregular in shape and it associated with the long neurons, it is phagocytic in nature it protects the brain from infection
