A passive transport in which water moves from lower concentrated solution to higher concentrated solution through semipermeable membrane is known as osmosis.

They are of two types

1.Exmosis:When transport of water takes place from inside to outside the cell. This cause shrinkage of cell

2.Endosmosis:When transport of water takes place from outside to inside the cell by this a cell swell up.

Osmosis is the process by which water moves from the place of its higher water concentration (dilute solution) to a place of it's lower water concentration (concentrated solution) through a semi permeable membrane.

Osmosis Applications :-

→ It helps the roots of plants to absorb water.

→ It helps the cells to absorb or release water.

Types of solution :-

Hypertonic Solution :-

Concentration of water inside the cell is more than outside. That is, outer environment is concentrated and inner is dilute. So water moves out of the cell, as a result cell shrinks.

Isotonic Solution

Water concentration is nearly the same in both environment, so there is no net change in the shape of a cell.

⇒ Hypotonic solution.

Outer water concentration is less, that is, the water is dilute in outer environment and concentrated in the cell. Hence, the cell takes up water and swells.
