Why does the author say that his grandmother was never pretty but always beautiful ??

Grandmother may not be externally beautiful, but she had a inner beauty and her very presence emitted a vibe of calmness and tranquility.she reflected a divine beauty from within. She was a symbol of peace, serenity and contentment. Her novel virtues gave her a spiritual beauty(She possessed deep spiritual beauty). She was beautiful by heart.

Khushwant sing says that his Grand mother was wrinkled ,fat, short and slightly bent women .In these conditions it was hard to believe that she was ever pretty. But her kind nature,serenity and peace on her face had special charm. So it can be estimated that she was beautiful and attractive .
