The stark effect is the shifting and splitting of spectral lines of atoms and molecules due to presence of an external electric field. The amount of splitting or shifting is called the Stark splitting or Stark shift.

The Zeeman effectis the effect of splitting a spectral line into several components in the presence of a static magnetic field. It is analogous to the stark effect, the splitting of a spectral line into several components in the presence of an electric field.

●●The Zeeman effect is the splitting of a spectral line by a magnetic field. ... The effectis due to the distortion of the electron orbitals because of the magnetic field. The (normal) Zeeman effect can be understood classically, as Lorentz predicted.
