Question:

What is valency?

Answer:

The electrons present in the outermost shell of an atom that take part in chemical reactions are known as valence electrons So, it is the ability of an atom to gain or lose electron in order to achieve the noble gas configuration. It refers to the ability of an element to combine with other element.

The outermost shell in which valence electrons is known as valence shell.

Example:

Lets check the electronic configuration of Sodium : 2,8,1 (total 11 electrons)

So the valency of sodium atom is 1.
