Let the age of first friend be x

Second friend be 20 - x

Step :-  2

According to Question ,

Four years ago product of their age was 48

( x - 4 ) ( 20 - x - 4 ) = 48

( x -4 ) ( 16 - x ) = 48

x^2 - 16 - 64 + x = 48

x^2 - 20 + 112 = 0 ----->>  1

Step :- 3

Compare equation 1 with General form of Quadratic equation

a = 1

b = -20

C = 112

Step :- 4

Therefore , D = b^2 - 4ac

(-20)^2 - 4 * 1 * 112

400 - 448

=>> -48 is smaller than 0

So , there are not zero real roots

Thus , the given  situation is not possible
