optical illusion in the hot desert areas and colder rrgions. at noon time, earth is hot and layer near earth is also hot and thus become rarer region and at high level, denser medium is present. therefore when light comes from top of tree, it suffers multiple refractions and when 17°C, then it is reflect back and image is produced inverted. as it appears that water is there but it is just an optical illusion.

Mirage happen when the ground very hot and the air is very cool..When the light moves through the cold air and into the layer of hot air is reflected .A layer of very warm air in the near the ground refracts the light from the sky nearly into a u shaped bend
