Acid - Base Indicators and Titrations.Acid - Base indicators (also known as pH indicators) are substances which change colour with pH. They are usually weak acids or bases, which when dissolved in water dissociate slightly and form ions. Consider anindicator which is a weak acid, with the formula HIn.

There are many synthetic indicators:Methyl Orange, Phenolphthalein,Bromothymol Blue, Creson Red, Alizarine Yellow R, Gentian Violet (or Methyl Violet), Leucomalachite Green, Bromocresol Purple, Naphtholphthalein, Thymolphthalein, etc.

Acid are sour in taste which turn blue to red, dissolve in water to release H+ ions.

Base are bitter in taste which turns red to blue when they dissolved in water to release OH- ions.

2 synthetic indicators are:-

Methyl Orange and Phenolphthalein
