first of all

when the albatross came to the mariners ship it brought with it some kind of a mist , this itself lead to a bad impression that the albatross was a bad omen . but originally it was a lucky omen sent by god to the mariners.

so when the ancient mariner killed the albatross everybody thought that he had done a good thing and that something that brought them bad luck was killed . no one scolded the mariner for his deed......

and after killing the albatross came the punishment by god upon the mariners the wind stopped and the boat looked like a painted ship on a painted sea .

the food had got finished and the poet laments that " water water everywhere not a drop to drink "

therefore we can justify that the ancient mariner and his crew deserved this punishment.
