Question - 1 :

On a 3 kg mass, 5 newton of force acts for 0.1 second. The impulse imparted to the mass is (in kg m/s)

Answer :

Mass of the body, m = 3 kg

Force acting on the body, F = 5 N

Time, t = 0.1 sec

Impulse (J) is equal to the change in momentum.

J = ΔP

J = F × t

Substitute the values,

J = 5 N × 0.1 sec

J = 0.5 N-s

J = 0.5 kg m/s

∴ Impulse imparted to the body is 0.5 kg m/s

Question - 2 :

A force of 5 N applied on m₁ produces an acceleration of 8 m/s² and when applied on m₂ produces an acceleration of 24 m/s². When they are tied together, the acceleration will be

Answer :

First let's find the values of m₁ and m₂

We know, F = ma

mass m₁,

5 N = m₁ × 8 m/s²

m₁ = 5/8 kg

mass m₂,

5 N = m₂ × 24 m/s²

m₂ = 5/24 kg

When they are tied together, total mass, M = m₁ + m₂

\tt M=\dfrac{5}{8}+\dfrac{5}{24} \\\\ \tt M=\dfrac{5 \times 3}{8 \times 3}+\dfrac{5}{24} \\\\ \tt M=\dfrac{15}{24}+\dfrac{5}{24} \\\\ \tt M=\dfrac{15+5}{24} \\\\ \tt M=\dfrac{20}{24} \\\\ \tt M=\dfrac{5}{6} kg

F = Ma

5 = (5/6) × a

a = 6 m/s²

∴ When they are tied together, the acceleration will be 6 m/s²
